Gregory S. Smith, MS, MSW - Managing Principal,
Consulting Services Division

 

Gregory S. Smith is the Managing Principal of our Consulting Services Division, a leading edge team of behavioral, psychological, and process engineering experts specializing in Executive Performance, Leadership Development, and Strategic Effectiveness -- delivering world-class Talent Management and Organizational Performance solutions to professional service firms, family-owned businesses, and the middle market.

 

Mr. Smith brings to our clients an exceptional set of competencies refined over 25+ years as an independent consultant and as a Senior Performance Advisor with a high-profile international consulting firm.  He has two Master's degrees in the behavioral and psychological sciences, along with the real world experience of starting his own highly entrepreneurial medical practice and professional service firm and building it into a multi-million dollar company in less than five year's time.

 

As a culmination of more than 10,000 hours of graduate training in human motivation and behavior change, plus tens of thousands of hours of proven expertise enhancing the performance of individuals and organizations, Mr. Smith is fully equipped to tackle the most challenging issues presented by our clients.  He is uniquely qualified to work side by side with the business world's most talented contributors - coaching and advising them to greater levels of performance and personal effectiveness.

Bill Adams, MS - Executive Director,
Performance Products Division

Bill  Adams, a former paratrooper, Army Ranger and sub-2:49 marathoner, is an expert in leadership and enhancing performance to unleash the potential of people on the athletic field, in the workplace, and in our everyday lives. An experienced mentor and educator with many years of developing leaders through coaching, mentoring and experiential learning activities, Bill has the proven ability to build and sustain winning teams.

 

Bill directed the Center for Enhanced Performance at West Point from 2001-2006 developing the full potential of over 4,000 student-athletes and Olympic athletes through applied performance psychology resulting in national and league championships and several Olympic appearances and medals. He also developed and delivered performance enhancement curricula to major combat units of the US Army contributing to improved leader performance in a combat zone. As a result of this extensive experience he is able to apply peak performance training to athletes, students and business people. A gifted teacher, Bill helps his audiences learn the skills they can use to improve their own lives.

 

In addition to serving as the Director of the Center for Enhanced Performance at West Point for five years, Bill also served as a professor of psychology and leadership at West Point and Duke University for six years previously. He has extensive experience as a career Army officer developing leaders in airborne and light infantry units and has commanded and led award-winning units of varying sizes. His expertise has been sought by business executives and CEOs from various fields and has been a regular contributor to Head Games Radio with Nick Lowery on Sirius Satellite Radio. Bill earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from West Point and an M.S. in Psychology from Virginia Tech. He is a member of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP).

 

Phil Begley, MBA, Partner & Cofounder

Phil is a co-founder of The Center for Advanced Performance (TCAP, Inc.). He has spent a lifetime studying, applying and teaching in the fields of leadership, organizational performance and professional development. Phil holds a bachelor's degree in Control Systems Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and an MBA from The Citadel. He taught management and leadership at The Citadel. After leaving active duty in the Navy, Phil served as a manufacturing manager for Michelin Tire Corporation. He helped pioneer the use of manufacturing cells, teams, and world class manufacturing techniques. As the Director of Training and Development for a division of Rockwell Automation, he led the change effort that earned the inaugural Trail Blazer Award, the annual quality award of the Power Transmission Industry. He was instrumental in helping General Shale Brick win the prestigious Tennessee Governor's Quality Award. In 1999 Phil retired from the Navy Reserves after 20 years of service to the nation.

In 1999 Phil joined VantagePoint as the Vice President of Organizational Performance. There he, along with other senior consultants, helped dozens of organizations understand their organizational needs from a market/customer perspective and then engage the work to align the organization with those expectations.

Phil has trained and consulted in dozens of companies and industries. As well, he has written extensively on the subject of leadership. He is the author of Catching Fire, a body of work dedicated to character-based leadership and The Parable of the Fulani Stick which explores the relationship between followers and leaders. Phil's passion is teaching, whether it be keynoting a conference or one to one executive coaching. "My greatest thrill is hearing clients tell or teach others what they have learned as if it were their original thought. That is the very definition of effective consulting."


He holds certifications as a Certified Professional Behavioral Analyst (CPBA) and Certified Professional Values Analyst (CPVA). As well, he is certified in the use of the TriMetrix assessment process for selection and professional development as well as the Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI). Phil has been a facilitator of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People for over fifteen years.
